Drake “Certified Lover Boy” Album Review

Six studio albums in, the 6 god’s discography has always been praised for his intimate lyricism and relatable outlook on relationships. So how did Drake become one of raps biggest problems?

On the morning of August 27th Drake surprised his fanbase with billboards in almost every major city. These billboards would announce what hometown rappers of that city would be appearing on his “Certified Lover Boy” project.

Certified Lover Boy”–released on Sept. 3– broke Drake’s own record of the most streamed album on Spotify in only a 24 hour release period 153.4 million streams, to be exact. At 21 tracks the record starts with

“I’ve been hot since the birth of my son, I remain unphased trust worst has been done”

Which leaves me to believe that Drake may be indicating that he was somehow tricked out of this baby or still upset with Kanye West for allegedly leaking the information about his son to Pusha T who used it in a diss record. Well now drake is claiming all his son’s including these rappers. Track number 3 which features Charlie Wilson and Drake playfully singing daddies home lets us know that Drake isnt here to play around.  With a lot of lyrics seeming to revolve around his feud with Kanye West, though never mentioning him by name his verse on “7 am In Bridle Path” shows he has no plans on slowing down.

“Told you I’m aimin’ straight for the head, not aiming to please. I could give a f— about who designing your sneakers and tees. Have somebody put you on a Gildan, you play with my seed,” he raps, seemingly alluding to the practice of putting someone’s photo on a Gildan T-shirt as a tribute after they die. And whats even more shocking is the cameo from fellow label mate Nicki Minaj on “Papi”s Home”

“Dont make me go get your mama to talk to you” says Drake who is followed by Nicki co signing “Cus if he gotta go get your mama imma pull that motherfxcking big switch out”

I could be reaching but that also seemed to be aimed at Yeezy and his DONDA album as well as anyone else who thinks the shoe fits.

Taking no prisoners he even takes a shot a Swiss Beatz who took to instagram earlier this year to express some ill feelings towards the Canadian rapper.

“He’s not a bad kid, he’s a good kid. He started from different things. We made hit records together, it’s all love. I don’t want no problems with anything,” Swizz said. “At the end of the day, ni**as is pussy for real. What’s up? Pop off. Let’s go.”

Despite Swiss apolgizing later on, on “You Only Live Twice” Drake  doesn’t hold back on his “Fancy” collaborater.

“Unthinkable when I think of the way these ni**as been actin’,” he raps. “Yeah, I never did nothin’ and you play like we family, huh?  Next thing, you wanna shoot me down, it can’t be love. Not sure where you was tryna send it, it can’t be up. That day you sounded like a bitch, you fancy, huh?

After the Meek Mill situation drake seems to be no stranger to conflict in the industry. With that being said this is a very traditional sound from Drake. And let me explain that traditional is never a bad thing with artist in my reviews. Traditional means consistency, and remaining consistent is all we ever ask as fans. This is so traditional it should have been Take Care 2 or Nothing Was The Same 2. Does it top Views? nope. But it tops Scorpion and it’s not as different as More Life. There are some new elements but there isn’t an overload of UK rapper cameos and carribean vibes. This is that Drake where the beat slows down at the end but the sample is the same. This album showcases everything Drake has to offer. It’s in heavy rotation for me.

The only issue I had was with the cover art. Seemed like a better for for DONDA to me. Drake did take to instgram to share alternate covers.
